Maths Week in Room 12

To celebrate maths week 6th class children from room 12 organised a fun maths hour for 2nd class.
We started the fun hour with a quiz.
2nd class were divided into groups of 4/5.
We gave each team a name: The Clever Circles, The Trying Triangles, The determined Diamonds, The smart semi-circles and The Rising Rectangles.

The quiz contained 16 questions:

  • How many dwarfs had snow white?
  • I have 3 sides and 3 corners. Who am I?
  • I had €9. I spent €6. How much money have I left?

After the quiz we all went outside where 6th class had organised different activities:

  • Snakes and ladders
  • Skipping games

  • Games using bean bags
  • Circle games

While 2nd class were playing the various activities two 6th class children corrected the answers to the quiz. Three teams scored full marks. Each child on the winning teams received two fridge magnets each.
We all really enjoyed the fun hour.

Maths Week in Junior Infants

During maths week we made our own pictogram. We used pictures of cars, bicycles, children walking and buses to show how we come to school.
We found out that most children travel by car.

1st class Maths Trail in Hazelwood

It was a beautiful afternoon on Thursday, the 14th of October and most exciting. It was the day of our trip to Hazelwood to do our maths trail.
I really like Hazelwood, so when my teacher, Mr Maye told us we were going there, I was filled with happiness.
We went to Hazelwood by bus. When we got there, we gathered leaves, holly and horse chestnuts, and we also counted the seats and the tables.
The day ended great. I had lots of fun with my friends and teacher.

3rd Class Maths Trail

On Thursday 14th of October 3rd class went on a maths trail around our school as part of maths week. In the hall we had to count how many radiators, semi-circles and circles were on the ground. Also we had to count how many people from the group could sit on a bench. In the corridors we counted window panes and answered questions about displays and plaques on the walls.

We went outside. We measured the wall and we also counted how many different cars there were in the staff car park. It was fun doing maths around the school!

The Trouble with Harry
Harry loves to keep pet hamsters. He looked around the house and saw hamsters everywhere! " I think there must be about 1280 hamsters in here" he said. "For the last seven years, they've been doubling in number each year"

How many hamsters were in Harry's house seven years ago?
