Active School Flag
On Thursday 7th October the pupils & staff from St. Edward's NS were awarded the Active School Flag by Mayor of Sligo, Matt Lyons.
The Active School Flag is a non-competitive initiative which aims to highlight the importance of PE, and sport in schools. St. Edward's won this prize for the first time in 2008 when a cash prize of €4000 was awarded. Since then the Flag Initiative has commenced.
The pupils in St. Edward's enjoy a wide variety of activities, dance, gymnastics, athletics, basketball, soccer, Gaelic, Olympic Handball, rugby, co-operative games, swimming and outdoor adventures. Parents are very supportive of initiatives like the Walking Bus, which encourages everyone to walk to school. The school is also fortunate to have good outdoor facilities, such as a pitch, walking track, basketball courts and a playing area with games painted on the surface.
St. Edward's NS gets great support from Sligo Sport & Recreation Partnership, Sligo Rovers, The GAA coaches, Sligo Rugby Club An Taisce, Sligo School Completion and, The Clarion Hotel where the children go for swimming lessons.
At the Award ceremony, staff and pupils were joined by Guests of Honour: Emma Hansberry (past pupil and member of Ireland Under-17 Ladies Soccer Team); Charlie Harrison (Sligo County Captain); Keith O'Dwyer, John Russell and Iarlaith Davern of Sligo Rovers. Mayor Lyons made the presentation.
